CUPS helps individuals and families in Calgary overcome poverty. Through integrated health care, education and housing services, CUPS empowers people to overcome the challenges of poverty and reach their full potential. Through integrated healthcare, education and housing services, CUPS empowers people to overcome the challenges of poverty and reach their full potential. In this pursuit, we draw upon our spiritual roots honouring the dignity of every human being.
CUPS offers medical, dental and mental health care through two medical clinics. Beyond primary health care, the clinics take into consideration the social determinants of health and seek to address additional issues such as lack of food security and housing, low health literacy and general low literacy rates. Many of CUPS patients are socially complex and require specialized supports.
CUPS pre- and post-natal programs serve as an entry point into other CUPS programs for at-risk families. By coordinating services, CUPS can assist families in moving from crisis to stability, increasing parenting skills and improve lifelong outcomes for children.
Finally, CUPS medical and mental health staff provide outreach services to six shelters and rehab centres in Calgary.
Sadly, poverty is often passed from one generation to the next. CUPS early intervention education programs help children avoid the negative impacts of poverty by working directly with children at our two child development centres, through intensive parent education, and through multiple family supports. These efforts bring stability to families, improve parenting skills and build brighter futures for children.
CUPS sees education as an essential investment in building lasting solutions to poverty. We are therefore proud to offer bursaries to selected Calgarians who live on low incomes and who are committed to active participation in CUPS programming.
CUPS housing and support programs provide housing for adults and families and prevents homelessness for those facing a crisis. Support programs help to prevent low-income individuals and families from 'falling through the cracks' by providing ID, referrals for food, clothing and furniture, and assistance with tax completion. CUPS Housing partners with Alberta Works and AISH to assist vulnerable individuals with the application processes.
