Starting Your Charity Resource: CentrePoint
Portal for Starting New Charities Launched
People looking to start a new charity now have a comprehensive resource to use online. CentrePoint Non-Profit Management has launched the website with funding from the Canada Revenue Agency to help non-profits navigate the sometime confusing waters to getting charitable status.
“The objective was to build a website dedicated to informing and educating the public on how to form a charity” says James Flaherty, Director of Operations at CentrePoint.
Flaherty says that people don’t often realize the extent of what is needed to start a charity. “They have a passion and want to seek charitable status so they can qualify for grants and other privileges but the process for getting status is daunting if you are not prepared. This resource will help people choose the right path for their cause.”
The resource is applicable to all Canadians who are looking for more information. In the wake of events like the Haitian earthquake, there is often an increase in efforts to start charities and this website will help those individuals and groups get the information they need to work through the process.
CentrePoint has published a guide to learning the process including incorporation, filling out CRA’s forms and other key considerations. Visitors will also discover other resources for their non-profit organization to help with governance, fund development and other considerations.
